home mac dojo faq question 19

What is a kia?

Basically a kia is a vocalization or 'yell' when you complete a finishing technique (traditionally called a 'killing blow'). A kia should come from your diaphragm, not your throat. It helps you to concentrate your efforts on one moment and one purpose.

"One of the definitions that I prefer for 'kia' is 'a meeting of the spirits'. To me, this implies a focusing of energy or simultaneously focusing the mind and body for one purpose." (a quote from a Mac dojo karateka)
